Practice Manager

Sue Bailey The Practice Manager, Mrs Sue Bailey is responsible for the general and business management of the Practice and may be able to help with any administrative and non-medical matters. She is also available to discuss suggestions or receive complaints.

Nurse Practitioner

Gill Brocklesby

The practice has a nurse practitioner who has been trained in the management of a range of minor illnesses. She has appointments available on the day and if appropriate can be pre-booked. The nurse practitioner is also able to prescribe and give advice. She is able to treat simple conditions including:

  • Sore throat
  • Earache
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Emergency contraception
  • Urine infections
  • Thrush
  • Vaginal Discharge
  • Rash
  • Skin infections
  • Nappy rash
  • Cough
  • Asthma
  • Hayfever
  • Gastroenteritis, Diarrhoea and vomiting – by telephone only
  • Minor injuries – joint pains, backache etc.

The Nurse Practitioner also holds the following clinics:

Venous leg ulcers and associated symptoms

Annual diabetic checks including bloods and dietary advice. She will be able to help with insulin conversion for Type 2 diabetic patients.

They can help with;

  • Minor casualty work eg Removal of stitches
  • Taking blood for tests
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Cervical smears
  • Contraception
  • Dressings
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Ear Syringing
  • Diabetes monitoring
  • Asthma monitoring, inhaler techniques
  • Coronary Heart Disease monitoring
  • Travel immunisations
  • Weight
  • Flu injections
  • ECG
  • Spirometry

The nurses also monitor various conditions including blood pressure. They are able to offer advice on other matters and are available to give blood test results from 12.30pm to 1.00pm each weekday. 

Receptionists

Reception staff

The receptionists are the first people in the practice you are likely to come into contact with. They will help you make appointment with the doctors or nurses and assist with other enquiries. 

District Nurses

There is a team of District Nurses attached to the practice who provide skilled nursing care for patients in their own homes. They will visit patients recently discharged from hospital, arrangements for which are usually made through reception or liaison with hospital staff.

Health Visitors

A team of Health Visitors are attached to the practice. They are specialist community health nurses with skills related to childhood development and behaviour. They work especially with families of young children and help them to access appropriate services. They give support and advice from the post-natal period through to pre-school age. The Health Visitors hold a Child Health Clinic each Tuesday morning in the surgery. 

Community Matron 

  The Community Matron, Linda Way, works with patients over the age of 65. She manages patients with chronic diseases in collaboration with the GP to improve quality of life and aims to prevent avoidable hospital admissions or over long hospital stays.

Emergency Care Practitioner

  The Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Chrissie Chilcott, is fully trained to assess patients in their homes after a home visit has been requested.

Community Staff Nurse for Adults and Older People

Lorraine Burke

The practice has a Community Staff Nurse, Lorraine Burke, who cares for adults and older people with special health needs. She is an expert in organising care packages for patients within their homes and will advise on areas of financial support ie Disability allowances and Attendance allowances.

Midwife

The midwife works closely with the doctors providing care for mother and baby before and immediately after the birth and holds an ante-natal clinic in the surgery each Wednesday afternoon.

Remember to take folic acid supplements from the chemist, stop smoking and drinking alcohol for three months before planned conception but if you have any pre-conception concerns please see one of the doctors. If there are no problems you do not need to see a doctor for confirmation of pregnancy but make an appointment to see the midwife at Downend Clinic Tel no: 0117 3302505.

Dietitian

The dietitian linked to the practice holds a monthly clinic in the surgery offering advice to diabetic patients. Referrals are made through the GPs.

Administrative Staff

The administrative staff consist of medical secretaries, computer operators and clerical staff. This team organises patient referrals to hospital in conjunction with the doctors, ensures all necessary information is recorded on the computer and deals with all routine office matters.
